Like other italian words gender is important. You’d tell a female “stai zitta”. You’d tell more than one person “state Zitti” My grandmother grew up in a house with a mother from Abruzzo and a father from Napoli – their family insisted on speaking english in the house. However she did pick up many words, one of which was her dialect saying “shut up”.
