I know basic French. (I took 2 years of it in school and have been teching myself for one year.)
I’m teaching myself Japanese. I know hiragana & katakana, as well as some basic things like numbers, phrases and etc…
I know basic Spanish and I’m taking it in school. (I’ll be taking Spanish for the next 4 years instead of 2 like most people.)
I don’t have money for classes. I also want to learn Arabic, Chinese, Italian and maybe some other languages… I love languages & culture.
What are some strategies for learning and remembering everything?
I don’t want to know about minorities but about a total number (even estimated)of american citizens having learned these languages and who still are able to use them (whether fluently or not).
Please be kind enough to quote your sources. Thanks!
Well, I plan on trying to learn 5 languages before I turn 20, that’s 6 years from now, and I would like to know how to approach it. And when I say lesson plan, please be specific, something like
Week One : Voc building
Week Two : Beginner’s grammar, nouns
Week Three: Beginner’s grammar, verbs…etc.
And the five languages are:
Spanish
French
Japanese
Igbo
Italian
I’ve just finished my freshman year in college, and developed an interest in learning a language. My high school had a really horrible language program, I took 4 years of Spanish and can’t form a complete sentence.
The languages I’m looking at choosing among are Spanish, Italian, and Russian. Spanish because that way I won’t have completely wasted my classes, Italian because I have a good friend who’s fluent in it, and Russian because of my High School physics teacher introducing me to a lot of Russian authors.
So my questions center not so much around which language to learn, but how to start learning one. Tips and tricks, mnemonics, experiences, common pitfalls, maintaining motivation, the works. Stories of how you went about it.
I need spelling tips for these languages, I’m going to the district bee and I want to be prepared.
Latin
Arabic
French
German
Dutch
Old English
Japanese
Greek
Italian
Spanish
Please help!
Im in my mid 20s and all I know is English but I am keen to learn and speak a foreign language. Im wondering which (Italian or Spanish) is easier to learn, read, write and pronounce.
Also are there any tips learning a foreign language as a beginner as I live in an English speaking country where I know no one that speaks these languages.
Is it also possible to learn these languages off the internet and through videos sharing sites like You tube as I cannot afford classes or tutors.
thanks
i’ve read articles that say that some languages that can be learned on livemocha.com have pretty bad lessons. anyone out there know for a fact that the italian lessons on that website represent the italian language well?

I am going to be taking spanish classes, and I really want to be fluent in Italian (the school I’m going to doesn’t offer Italian). My question is: is it easier to learn spanish and THEN learn italian, or can I just learn both languages at the same time? Thanks so much!
I want to brush up on my languages — French and Italian — and was hoping to do so by reading some used or new paperbacks in those languages. Any tips?
I’m really interested in a deep undestanding of the language. I don’t just want to know how to ask for directions etc. I’ve studied other languages before and would prefer a self-study program. Should I buy university textbooks, language software or other methods? I’d be particularly interested in the opinion of an Italian teacher. Is it reasonable to expect that a person can teach themself Italian and, if so, how would you recommend it me done? Thank you.
I’m a 3rd generation Italian and I have a 4′10" chubby Italian Mother who has helped me love my heritage. Unfortunately, after 3 generations, language is lost for me and my children are fractionally Italian. I want to learn the language well and take my family to Italy many times. Maybe they’ll love it like I do.
Many thanks to all responders. Dr. Dee and Lamaestra, your answers are tie and the best answer is by combining both. Unfotunately, I have to pick one. You were very helpful. Thank you for your thoughtful insights.
